One chance meeting ends up on the cover of Reeves Journal

    Posted 4/10/2014 by Kim Bliss

About three years ago, a colleague of mine and I traveled to San Diego for a business conference. While in town, we thought it would be a great opportunity to visit some customers that are installing our Uponor products and systems into homes and businesses in the greater San Diego area. Our regional sales manager took us to visit a gentleman by the name of Scott Hall of Radiant Solutions, Inc.

Commercial building projects are becoming increasingly sophisticated and energy conscious, and many of the projects we are involved with are LEED®-certified with all hands-on-deck to ensure an efficient final product.

Uncovering the ‘Mystery’ of Radiant Floor Heating Systems

    Posted 3/17/2014 by Kim Bliss
A couple years ago, our friends installed radiant floor heating in their lake home. When I asked the wife about it, she said she actually feels more comfortable at the lake home set at 68 degrees Fahrenheit than her primary residence (which has a traditional forced-air furnace) at 72 degrees. Who’s Happy about all the Snow? We are! (No, really, we are)

    Posted 3/7/2014 by Kim Bliss

With unprecedented snow and ice storms around the country over the past few months, you’d hardly think anyone would be excited about the weather. But, if you work for a company that makes snow and ice melting systems, then you’d be grinning all the way down your clear, dry, non-snow-covered walkway to work.

A Cultural Plumbing Change from an Insider's Perspective

    Posted 3/5/2014 by Stu Lorton

I’m a plumber first (with an engineering and sales heart) and when I see an unexpected opportunity pop up I can’t help myself; I have to act! So when two new five-story apartment buildings with 157 and 95 units specified with CPVC were going up in Lynnwood, Wash., I couldn’t control myself.  I had to offer up Uponor’s alternative design solution to overcome the traditional trunk and branch design using CPVC.

    Dare to be bold!

    Posted 2/26/2014 by Bill Gray
Last week, besides being glued to the TV watching the Canadian hockey teams "kick-butt and take names", I read an interesting article titled Creating Bold Innovation in Mature Markets by Robert G. Cooper. Dr. Cooper has pioneered many groundbreaking discoveries in product innovation, including the Stage-Gate® Idea-to-Launch Process, now implemented by almost 80% of North American companies. In this article, he argues that when companies are faced with mature markets, bigger, bolder innovation is the only sustainable route for long-term growth and prosperity. Read more... Comments (0)

Why PEX is more sustainable than copper

    Posted 2/24/2014 by Dale Stroud

Though mostly unfounded and unfair, plastics take a lot of “hits” in some environmental circles. It seems that castigating plastics as being bad for the environment is the “thing to do”. However, when you look into many of the allegations of plastics being bad for the environment, there is a lot of bad science and misplaced emotion involved. It’s easy to blame plastics when other options that are PERCEIVED as being better for the environment are available. However, often times, perception is not reality.

    Walking the 2014 IBS/KBIS beat

    Posted 2/18/2014 by Karen Mellott-Foshier

I'm an English major so didn't choose any plumbing or heating classes as electives. What I've learned about our industry over the past decade is primarily what I've picked up from the many smart people I work with at Uponor. And from visiting customers and jobsites and attending trade shows, like IBS and KBIS most recently.

Uponor just wrapped up a wildly successful week in New York City, participating in the 2014 ASHRAE Winter Conference and AHR Expo. A large contingent of Uponorians descended on the Big Apple, each with their own set of hectic schedules and agendas. Here are some highlights of some of the things that I had the opportunity to participate in.

    What’s so great about AHR?

    Posted 1/15/2014 by Kim Bliss
Last year I attended my first AHR Expo at the Dallas Convention Center. In the months leading up to my trip, I was curious what the big draw was to an event for people in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR) business. People from around the country — even the world — were excited about AHR. In fact, our most widely downloaded webinar was our AHR Preview from 2012. (So, of course, we had to do a 2014 AHR Preview Webinar.) Read more... Comments (0)

On the road journal: Uponor PEX and naked biker

    Posted 12/31/2013 by Devin Abellon

So there we were, Alan Squires and I, driving through the streets of Austin on a sunny afternoon on our way to meet Brittany, the local rep with Pepco Sales. We had just wrapped up a series of “speed dating” one-on-one meetings with college, university, and healthcare facility managers. A number of the facility managers told us that they were already using PEX for both retrofits and new construction. Some mentioned that they would consider it on future projects. Others admitted that they never heard of PEX before and remained skeptical.

PEX appeal - A failure to communicate

    Posted 12/23/2013 by Alan Squires

My job at Uponor requires me to spend time traveling to visit our new and existing customers. During my travels I get the opportunity to meet a variety of interesting people.  A lot of times these encounters occur on airplanes and most often it involves the person sitting next to me.  A few years ago during Uponor sales training we were tasked with coming up with our “elevator” speech.   The purpose was to teach us to tell a stranger about our job and our products in a short period of time.  The goal was to perfect the story in the amount of time you might spend in an elevator.  A few weeks ago I got the chance to expand my “elevator” speech and turn it into my “airplane” speech.  That is where this story begins.
