San Diego Radiant Floor Heating

One chance meeting ends up on the cover of Reeves Journal

About three years ago, a colleague of mine and I traveled to San Diego for a business conference. While in town, we thought it would be a great opportunity to visit some customers that are installing our Uponor products and systems into homes and businesses in the greater San Diego area. Our regional sales manager took us to visit a gentleman by the name of Scott Hall of Radiant Solutions, Inc.

Scott had been installing radiant floor heating systems for more than 28 years, and I was fascinated to learn how he got into the business and kept it flourishing (even during the housing downturn) for nearly three decades.

After talking with him at one of his jobsites, I learned that Scott was originally from Colorado and learned about radiant floor heating from his grandfather who owned a plumbing business. His grandfather installed radiant floor heating in his shop, and the system effectively heated the entire structure — even in temperatures at 30 or 40 degrees below zero. So, when Hall built his first home, radiant was at the forefront of his mind. He decided to make the system the sole form of heating for his home (the first of its kind in San Diego at the time).

I was curious how he could find business installing radiant floor heating in a warm, moderate climate such as San Diego. He said lots of residents in San Diego had experienced the comfort of radiant in their ski chalets in the mountains and wanted that same comfort in their primary homes. He also said that patio warming became very popular as well since San Diego evenings can be chilly but people still want to enjoy their outdoor living areas. Interesting…I’d never thought about that.

So, fast forward two-and-a-half years later and I decide to write an article about Scott’s success installing radiant floor heating in warm climates. The article was featured on the cover of the April 2014 issue of Reeves Journal. I was surprised it made the cover, but apparently I’m not the only one who is fascinated by radiant in warm climates.
