New Thinking with Uponor PEX

In my job, I get to meet so many interesting people who tell me their stories about why they used PEX for their plumbing, radiant heating and cooling or fire safety system and how much they love it. One of my most recent experiences was Anthony Lampuris, executive vice president with ABL & Associates in Raleigh, N.C.
His company was the installing contractor on a PEX plumbing project at North Carolina Student Housing. They had just finished the installation on their first ever PEX job, and I was listening to a PEX convert after years of being a steadfast user of copper and CPVC for plumbing. He explained that his guys installed the plumbing system 30 percent faster with PEX, and that he enjoyed a substantial cost saving over copper.
As with any project, there were roadblocks along the way. In this particular instance, the State Construction Office for NCSU did not approve of PEX, including Uponor AquaPEX® and ProPEX® fittings for any state-owned projects – only copper and CPVC. But the contractor, a staunch Uponor and PEX supporter, lobbied for PEX, and though it took both time and effort; the specifications were changed from copper to PEX.
Talking with Lampuris, he’s now convinced using PEX for commercial plumbing is a trend that will continue to grow in the near future as more and more professionals like him begin to realize that with the proven benefits and cost savings of PEX over copper and CPVC, PEX is truly the best option for a home or building’s plumbing system.
