Why Commercial Plumbing is Seeing a Surge in PEX

A recent project at the University of Louisville is a prime example of why contractors, engineers and building owners are moving from traditional rigid pipe products, like copper and CPVC, to flexible, durable crosslinked polyethylene (PEX) pipe.
When the University needed two new buildings for student housing and retail space, they piped the first structure with CPVC, but were falling behind on the project’s tight schedule. They decided to try Uponor PEX-a for the next building and found it to be a faster, better system compared to CPVC.
According to Chris Blevins, president of Patriot Plumbing, his team roughed in one unit per day using CPVC in the first building. But then they turned to Uponor’s PEX-a pipe for the second building, the team roughed in three units per day (not including the time saved not having to chase down dry fits and crossed lines during the testing process).
People in the industry are starting to see the real benefits of PEX: its flexibility, durability, reliable connection system and warranty. For example, the flexibility of PEX-a pipe allows simple bends as opposed to necessary connections with rigid CPVC, reducing the number of required fittings by 40 to 70%. This reduction in connections also means reduced liability with fewer potential leak points. And because an Uponor PEX-a plumbing system cannot be dry fit, due to the need to first expand the pipe before inserting a fitting, it eliminates dry-fit blow offs that can occur with CPVC systems.
And for the labor savings, the numbers speak for themselves. During the CPVC plumbing installation in the first building of the University project, Patriot Plumbing used a 60-person crew; using PEX-a for the second building only required a 20-person crew.

Just like the article stated, the reason for the surge in PEX is efficiency. Just like many other industries, companies are looking the most the maximum productivity from the small number of people.
