The Uponor AquaSAFE system combines the fire sprinklers with the home’s cold-water plumbing. It uses the same proven, flexible, durable Uponor AquaPEX® crosslinked polyethylene (PEX) tubing that provides water to the plumbing fixtures in your home so there is always a ready supply of water to the sprinkler heads if it is ever needed in the event of a fire.
PEX is an acronym for crosslinked polyethylene. It is a flexible, durable, corrosion-resistant product that possesses distinctive properties that make it ideal for fire sprinkler, plumbing and radiant floor heating and cooling systems. There are three different types of PEX tubing: PEX-a, PEX-b and PEX-c. Uponor manufactures PEX-a tubing, which is considered the superior type of PEX in the industry.
Yes. Uponor PEX has undergone decades of rigorous testing. In 1973, Uponor (then Wirsbo), submitted PEX tubing samples to an independent laboratory. For three decades, these samples underwent continuous hydrostatic tests at extreme temperatures and pressures — up to 203°F and 239 psi. When the 30-year life cycle tests were concluded, not a single piece of Uponor PEX had experienced any breakdown or failure.
The sprinklers in an Uponor AquaSAFE system respond to heat, not smoke. The odds of a malfunction are just one in 16 million.
Because Uponor AquaSAFE multipurpose systems do not require antifreeze or backflow preventers, there is very little maintenance. To learn more about the system, watch our Uponor AquaSAFE Homeowner Instructions video.
