Case Study: Bensonwood This Old House Collection

 Highlights

  • Bensonwood Homes, the nation’s premier designer and builder of high-performance, energy-efficient houses, and This Old House Ventures, America's foremost home-enthusiast brand, collaborate to offer a collection of signature homes that feature Uponor plumbing systems as well as the option for Uponor radiant floor heating and fire sprinkler systems.
  • Bensonwood’s exclusive Open-Built® system takes a layered approach to designing and building, with each layer defined by its life span and anticipated need for future alteration, offering homes built efficiently and with minimal waste.
  • The inaugural four homes in the collection feature a 300-year-structure, timber-frame construction and range in size from 1,500 to 2,300 square feet.

Background

For more than 30 years, Bensonwood Homes has been creating architecturally significant wood-structured buildings across the country. Their exclusive Open-Built® system takes a layered approach to design/build, with each layer defined by its life span and anticipated need for future alteration. The high quality homes resulting from this process are built efficiently and with minimal waste.

Open-Built design and construction allows homeowners to easily move or remove walls and fixtures, access swiftly evolving technologies, or otherwise adapt the home to the changing needs of the occupants. The disentangled layers of the Open-Built house (where mechanical systems are separated from the building envelope), allow for alteration and modification, without the enormous waste and expense normally associated with home renovation.

Additionally, the homes’ exclusive, panelized design typically heat and cool for a fraction of the cost of their stick-built counterparts. The well-insulated, extremely tight building envelopes continue to conserve resources by reducing the energy load of the home. The lowered heating and cooling requirements result in lower operational costs. And incorporating an Uponor radiant floor heating system can help make the home’s comfort system even more energy efficient.

As for sustainability, a timber frame assures a 300-year structure because the building’s endoskeleton is well protected from the weather outside and exposed for inspection inside. And incorporating an Uponor multipurpose plumbing and fire sprinkler system provides an option for homeowners looking to safeguard their family and home.
