Project Highlights
- The Conroy home in Lake Zurich, Ill., was designed to be a Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired home, from the architecture all the way down to the comfort system.
- Dave Chapel of Radiant by Design created a system for the Conroys that maximized comfort and equally matched the architectural design of the home.
- The 9,300-square-foot home incorporated Uponor radiant floor heat with the Quik Trak radiant panel system as well as the new Climate Cŏntrol Network System for complete indoor climate control.
Background
When Jim and Linda Conroy began planning their dream home in Lake Zurich, Ill., they knew right away what they wanted. Both had been long-time admirers of Frank Lloyd Wright, and wanted to design a home that followed his architectural principles.
“Part of our studies of Frank Lloyd Wright showed that he was a pioneer of radiant floor heat, so it was a must-do for us,” says Jim Conroy. “Plus, everyone we talk to always raves about the comfort, so we were excited to put it in our new home.”
Dave Chapel of Radiant by Design in McHenry, Ill., was the installing contractor and knew right away which radiant system he would install for the Conroys’ expansive, 9,300-square-foot home.
“I’ve been installing Uponor (and Wirsbo) radiant floor heating since 1997,” says Chapel. “It’s a rock-solid company that’s been in business the longest, and I know I can trust them.”
Chapel used Uponor’s Quik Trak radiant panels to install the system in the main and upper floors and embedded the tubing in the concrete for the basement.
“The home was originally specified for concrete overpours in the main and second levels, but moisture and weight issues made Quik Trak a better alternative,” says Chapel. “Plus, the slim, 1/2" profile of Quik Trak makes it less intrusive to the rest of the home’s construction.”
The Conroy home also received the new Uponor Climate Cŏntrol™ Network System to manage and control all the HVAC components throughout the home.
“With the Network System, we are able go online to view and change settings to all our HVAC systems — humidity controls, air cleaners, air exchangers, air conditioners, radiant heat and forced-air heat,” says Conroy. “It’s amazing. Uponor is so far ahead of everyone else.”
The installation included Uponor’s Climate Cŏntrol Network System as well as several TruFLOW Manifolds.
