Uponor North America is a company with a long history of service. It first began as Wirsbo, founded in 1620 in Virsbo, Sweden, forging high-quality steel and weapons for the King of Sweden.

Today, the company is a leading provider of crosslinked polyethylene (PEX) plumbing, radiant heating/cooling, hydronic piping, pre-insulated piping and fire sprinkler systems for residential and commercial structures worldwide. Located in Apple Valley, Minn., a suburb of the Twin Cities, the North American headquarters employs approximately 500 people and houses corporate offices, a state-of-the-art Uponor Academy training center and the company’s manufacturing facility.

 

The company also has distribution centers in Lakeville, Minn., Calgary, Alb., and Brampton, Ont. with technical and design support teams located in Lakeville, Minn., Regina, Sask., Mississauga, Ont. and Laval, Que. Canadian sales, marketing and customer support is located in Mississauga, Ont. in addition to sales managers and field technical representatives located throughout the U.S. and Canada.

 

Uponor North America is part of Uponor Corporation, which also includes Uponor Nordic and Uponor Europe – West, East and South. Led by President and CEO Jyri Luomakoski and headquartered in Vantaa, Finland, the corporation is listed on the Nordic Exchange in Helsinki. A strong supporter of community involvement, Uponor North America is an active member of the local Twin Cities business environment, including the Apple Valley Chamber of Commerce. In fact, in 2007, Uponor received the Chamber’s Business of the Year award in recognition of the company’s growth, development potential and commitment to sustainable corporate practices.

Uponor Timeline

1620:      Wirsbo Company founded in Virsbo, Sweden.

1968:      German inventor, Dr. Thomas Engel, developed a method to chemically crosslink polyethylene (PEX).

1970:      Wirsbo introduces Engel-method PEX to the European market.

1984:      Incorporated in the United States, Wirsbo opens its North American operations with two people in Rockford, Ill., and introduces Engel-method PEX for radiant heating to the U.S. market.

1988:      Wirsbo moves its offices to Lakeville, Minn., and is acquired by Uponor, an international plastic pipe manufacturing conglomerate.

1990:      Opened a 60,000-square-foot North American headquarters and manufacturing facility in Apple Valley, Minn.

1992:      Wirsbo of Canada, located in Regina, Saskatchewan, became a fully staffed, wholly owned subsidiary of Wirsbo North America.

1993:      Launched AquaPEX® plumbing system

1996:      Added 17,500 square feet to the Apple Valley manufacturing facility.

1997:      Added 30,000 square feet of warehouse space.

1998:      Added 17,500 square feet to the Apple Valley manufacturing space.

2000:      Constructed a 20,000-square-foot sales and marketing facility adjacent to the North American headquarters in Apple Valley featuring an 11,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art training center.

2000:      Launched AquaSAFE™, a patented, multipurpose plumbing and residential fire sprinkler system.

2001:      Changed name from Wirsbo to Uponor Wirsbo to capitalize on the market awareness and strong reputations of both companies.

2002:      Distribution center moves from Apple Valley to Burnsville, Minn.

2005:      Burnsville Distribution Center expands to 350,000 square feet; North American headquarters in Apple Valley adds 43,500 square feet.

2006:      Changed name from Uponor Wirsbo to Uponor.

2008:      Opened Canadian Sales and Marketing headquarters in Mississauga, Ont.

2009:      Opened Lakeville, Minn. and Calgary, Alb. distribution centers.

2009:      First PEX manufacturer to offer a lead-free plumbing solution from inlet to faucet.

2010:      Opened the newly renovated Uponor Academy Training Center in Apple Valley.

2010:      Uponor and Milwaukee Electric Tool join forces to develop a comprehensive solution for installing Uponor's ProPEX® fitting system via the M12™ and M18™ ProPEX Expansion Tools.

2012:      Received the 2012 Efficiency Partner Award from Xcel Energy.

2013:      Named the 2013 Manufacturer of the Year by Manufacturers Alliance.

2013:      Won Plastics Pipe Institute (PPI) 2013 Project of the Year for San Francisco’s Pier 15 Exploratorium which included an Uponor Radiant Heating and Cooling System.

2013:      Named a Top 100 Workplace by the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

2013:      Launched Uponor Innovations, a wholly owned subsidiary and corporate enterprise designed to identify emerging markets and create new, game-changing products.

2013:      Launched new public websites as part of a global initiative to incorporate a common web platform across all Uponor companies worldwide.

2014:      Named a Community Impact Award winner in the Sustainability category by Minnesota Business magazine.

2014:      Named a Progress Minnesota 2014 honoree by Finance & Commerce magazine.

2014:      Named a Top 100 Workplace by the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
