Most people think a fire won't happen to them, but I'm obsessed with it happening because it did.
I was nine.
My father had made us breakfast before my youngest sister and I caught the bus to church. My other sister (not a morning person) slept in, but then helped my dad mow the lawn. Then they, along with my mom, went to the grocery store. When they returned 20 minutes later, our entire home was in flames. A stove burner had been left on accidentally.
We lost everything. Our home. Our clothes. Our toys. Our peace of mind.
It's a few decades later, and I still haven't gained that last thing back. I check the stove and oven several times before I go to bed and before I leave the house.
"Off, off, off, off, off, off." "Burner, burner, burner, burner, stove, toaster oven." Yep, that's my daily and nightly mantra.
And, yeah…I'm that crazy chick.
All my friends and family know not to question me if I leave a movie, a hockey game or a party or get out of bed at 1 a.m. to check the stove or iron…you know, on that off chance that I actually forgot to check.
National Fire Prevention Week was Oct. 6-12, 2013, and this year's theme: Preventing Kitchen Fires. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), cooking is the leading cause of home fires and injuries.
You would think I would have peace of mind with all our modern advances. We've got smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, appliances that turn themselves off with a timer, a fire escape plan, and even a monitoring service where if the alarm company's smoke alarm goes off in the home, it calls the emergency number immediately.
All to bring peace of mind. That's what Uponor AquaSAFE PEX residential fire sprinkler system offers to families. It's pretty impressive to see it in action.
For several years, we've partnered with the Mendota Heights, Minn. Fire Department to demonstrate a side-by-side live burn - one room without a sprinkler and one with Uponor AquaSAFE featuring Uponor PEX pipe. We held another event this year during Fire Safety Week. Within 12 seconds, the fire in the sprinklered room was out with minimal damage. The room without a fire sprinkler system did not fare well – it was very damaged before the fire department would have been able to respond.
So how does the AquaSAFE work? AquaSAFE featuring Uponor crosslinked polyethylene (PEX) and ProPEX® fittings is a multipurpose system, which means it is combined with a home’s cold-water plumbing system. It uses the same Uponor PEX tubing that provides potable water to the plumbing fixtures in a home so there is always a ready supply of water to the sprinkler heads. The system eliminates stagnant water so it doesn’t require check valves or backflow preventers.
Most of you haven't experienced a home fire, and I hope you never do. But what if? You won't have to worry about that question with the reliable Uponor AquaSAFE system, designed to bring you peace of mind.
