Lux Living in Mixed-use Complex

Austin is one of the fastest growing metropolitan cities in the U.S., so it is no wonder that the urban luxurious shopping and living area called The Domain is bustling with activity, including the building of several new apartment complexes.

The two newest buildings, housing 212 apartments, include Uponor Ecoflex® Thermal Single from Uponor for the chilled-water distribution that connects to each riser location from the city’s underground steel pipes. Manufactured with all non-corrosive materials and with long coil lengths, Ecoflex was the ideal product for this installation. City Wide Mechanical, a Dallas-based mechanical contractor, completed the installation and JJ Campbell was the supervisor in charge of the installation.

“Ecoflex is faster to install than copper and it is also more economical in large installations,” he explained. “We used Ecoflex on a few previous jobs and we felt confident that we were ready for this larger installation.”

It took three City Wide installers about nine weeks to install the 8,000 feet of Ecoflex, and local Uponor rep firm Pepco Sales & Marketing helped provide assistance onsite at the start of the installation.

City Wide’s installers’ main concern prior to the installation was the bend radius around corners and angles, but because of the long coil lengths and the tight bending radius of Ecoflex, it ended up being a non-issue, according to Campbell.

“And since no joints were required when they changed direction or grade, the installation was quick and uneventful; just the way we like it,” Pepco’s James Wickersham said. The installers switched to Wirsbo hePEX™ for the hydronic distribution piping for the fan coil units, utilizing Uponor’s ProPEX® fitting technology for strong, durable connections. The Wirsbo hePEX piping comes in various coil lengths up to 1,000 feet in length, which helped speed up installation time.

Aptly nicknamed Austin’s second downtown, The Domain has made the concept of living and working in an eco-friendly, open-air center atmosphere a way of life for a new generation of Austinites who rush to live in a progressive mix of lifestyle venues.
