Earth Day is today, April 22, and where ever you are, we hope you’re celebrating! Let’s kick off the holiday with some quick facts from dosomething.org:

1.  The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1975. (Happy 36th birthday, planet Earth...I can’t quite put my finger on it, but that doesn’t sound right.)

2.  Earth Day originated in the United States, but it became recognized worldwide in 1990.

3.  The holiday was officially renamed by the United Nations in 2009 as International Mother Earth Day. (But you better believe Americans still refer to it as Earth Day.)

4.  In 2011, 298 million trees were planted in Afghanistan by the Earth Day Network.

5.  In 2012, more than 100,000 people rode bikes in China to reduce CO2 emissions.

Remember, the Earth deserves more recognition and care than just one day out of the year. Here’s how we can all make sustainable practices a part of our everyday life.

1.  Become a member of a community garden. (Just Google it!)

2.  Change the lights in your house from traditional light bulbs to CFL or LED. (Don’t forget to turn them off when they aren’t in use.)

3.  Walk or ride your bike when you’re running errands close to home.

4.  Unplug cords from outlets when not in use. (Think about it—your toaster doesn’t need to be plugged into the wall all day, every day just in case of a toast emergency.)

5.  Unsubscribe from unwanted mail, or request to go paperless.

In honor of Earth Day, Uponor employees are picking up and disposing litter found throughout a local park and road in Apple Valley, Minn.—the home of Uponor North America—as a part of Uponor's Adopt-A-Park and Adopt-A-Highway programs.

Uponor’s commitment to sustainable building includes the ongoing development of new materials and methods that reduce negative environmental impact. Uponor sells systems that conserve water and use less energy, creating technologies that use cleaner installation methods. For example, our residential AquaSAFE™ fire sprinkler system can extinguish a fire in seconds, using less water than a firefighter’s hose, so the amount of water loss and building materials going to the landfill greatly diminishes. The Uponor AquaPEX® PEX plumbing system can be installed using the Uponor Logic methodology saving on the amount of PEX tubing and ProPEX® fittings needed.
