Earth Day started in 1970 in the United States to raise awareness for environmental issues impacting our planet. Today, the holiday is celebrated by more than one billion people around the world.

At Uponor, water is near and dear to our hearts because it flows through our PEX plumbing and PEX radiant heating and cooling systems. To protect and conserve our favorite natural resource, here are three steps we can take at home.

1.    Avoid the permanent-press cycle during laundry.

The permanent press cycle uses an extra five gallons of water for the additional rinse. If you do an average of five loads of laundry every week, that’s an additional 1,300 gallons of water by the end of the year. And let’s be honest with ourselves, we don’t really even know what the permanent-press cycle does.

2.    Use mulch (or composting) around outdoor plants.

Mulch insulates and protects soil from drying out and causes less evaporation to take place. This allows just a little bit of water to go a long way.

3.    Choose an efficient heating system.

If you want to lower your energy usage and be extremely comfortable in your home, consider an Uponor PEX radiant heating system. Radiant floor heating has the capacity to transport energy 3,500 times greater than air, so it can heat (and even cool) using less energy than a forced-air system. Not to mention, more people are comfortable with radiant floor heating at a lower thermostat setting than with forced-air heating at a higher thermostat setting.

Uponor’s commitment to sustainable building includes the ongoing development of new materials and methods that reduce negative environmental impact. Uponor provides PEX solutions that conserve energy and water, reduce jobsite waste and offer cleaner installation methods.
